๐Ÿ“ What is a NEMA Frame Size?

NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) frame sizes are standardized motor dimensions that ensure interchangeability between manufacturers. When you need to replace a motor, matching the frame size guarantees the new motor will have the same shaft height, bolt pattern, shaft diameter, and mounting footprint as the original - regardless of who made it.

โœ“ Why Frame Size Matters

  • Ensures physical fit on existing base
  • Shaft aligns with driven equipment
  • Bolt holes match existing pattern
  • Coupling/pulley fits shaft

โš ๏ธ What Frame Doesn't Tell You

  • Horsepower rating
  • Voltage or phase
  • Enclosure type (TEFC, ODP)
  • Efficiency class

๐Ÿ“‹ Key Dimensions Defined

  • D: Shaft centerline height
  • 2E: Bolt hole spacing (width)
  • 2F: Bolt hole spacing (length)
  • U: Shaft diameter
๐Ÿ”ข Decoding Frame Numbers

The frame number itself tells you the shaft centerline height:

256T First 2 digits 25 รท 4 = 6.25" (Shaft Height D) 3rd digit Body length (relative) Suffix T = T-frame (1964 standard)

๐Ÿ’ก Quick Formula

Shaft Height (D) = First 2 digits รท 4

Examples: 143T โ†’ 14รท4 = 3.5" | 256T โ†’ 25รท4 = 6.25" | 326T โ†’ 32รท4 = 8"

๐Ÿ”ค Understanding Frame Suffixes

The letter(s) after the frame number indicate special features, mounting configurations, or design standards. Getting the suffix wrong means the motor won't fit!

๐Ÿ“ Common Suffixes
SuffixMeaningKey Feature
T T-Frame (Standard) Current NEMA standard since 1964
TS T-Frame Short Shaft For direct coupling, shorter N-W
TC T-Frame C-Face Flange mount on drive end
JM Jet Pump - Close Coupled Special shaft for pump mounting
Jet Pump - Extended Extended shaft for pump impeller
U U-Frame (Old Standard) Pre-1964, larger dimensions
H Larger shaft diameter Same frame, bigger shaft
Z Special mounting or shaft Non-standard, check specs
๐Ÿ”ง T vs TC vs TS Comparison
T-Frame Standard foot mount Belt/chain drive TC-Frame C-Face flange mount Direct to gearbox/pump TS-Frame Short shaft Flexible coupling Shaft Length T:Standard TC:Standard TS:Shorter
โš ๏ธ C-Face Flange Sizes

TC frames have standardized bolt circle diameters:

๐Ÿ’ง JM vs JP Pump Frames
JM - Close Coupled Threaded shaft end Impeller mounts directly JP - Extended Shaft Longer shaft extension Deeper pump connection

โš ๏ธ Critical Note

JM and JP motors are NOT interchangeable with standard T-frames. They have different shaft diameters and configurations specifically for jet pump applications.

๐Ÿ”ฉ Motor Mounting Configurations

Motors can be mounted in various positions. Lubrication and ventilation may be affected by mounting position.

๐Ÿ“ Foot Mount (F1, F2)
F1 - Horizontal Shaft horizontal Feet on bottom MOST COMMON F2 - Wall Mount Feet on wall/side
๐Ÿ“ C-Face Mount (FC)
C-Face Flange Mount Gearbox Bolt holes Pilot (register)

C-Face Advantages

  • No need for separate coupling
  • Self-aligning via pilot diameter
  • Compact installation
  • Common for gearboxes and pumps
๐Ÿ“ Vertical Mounting
V1 - Shaft Down Shaft points down V2 - Shaft Up Shaft points up

โš ๏ธ Vertical Mount Considerations

  • Must be specified when ordering - affects bearings
  • Thrust bearing required for shaft-up loads
  • Check lubrication requirements
  • Different bearing preload than horizontal
๐Ÿ”ง Mounting Position Codes

V4Vertical, shaft up, flange bottomUp

๐Ÿ“ Measuring in the Field

When the nameplate is missing or illegible, measure these dimensions:

  1. Shaft Height (D) - Base to shaft centerline
  2. Shaft Diameter (U) - Use calipers or micrometer
  3. Shaft Length (N-W) - End of shaft to shoulder
  4. Bolt Pattern (2E ร— 2F) - Center to center of mounting holes
  5. Bolt Hole Size - Diameter of mounting holes
  6. Key Size - Width and height of keyway

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip

Take photos of the old motor before removal, including any visible nameplate data, conduit box location, and mounting arrangement.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes

โœ— Don't Do This

  • Ignoring suffix: 256T โ‰  256TC โ‰  256TS
  • Mixing U-frame with T-frame: Pre-1964 motors are different
  • Wrong rotation: Check CW vs CCW from shaft end
  • Overlooking NEMA vs IEC: Metric frames are different
  • Ignoring mounting position: Vertical requires special bearings

โœ“ Always Verify

  • Voltage and phase matches supply
  • HP meets or exceeds application
  • RPM is compatible with driven equipment
  • Enclosure suits the environment
  • Service factor for overload capability
๐Ÿ”„ T-Frame vs U-Frame

If replacing a motor on old equipment (pre-1964), it may be U-Frame:

FeatureU-Frame
(Pre-1964)
T-Frame
(Current)
DimensionsLargerSmaller
EfficiencyLowerHigher
Direct replacementNot interchangeable!

โš ๏ธ U to T Conversion

When replacing U-Frame with T-Frame, you'll need adapter bases or new mounting arrangements. T-Frame motors are physically smaller for the same HP.

๐ŸŒ NEMA vs IEC Frames

IEC (metric) motors use different frame designations:

NEMA FrameIEC FrameShaft Height
143TD9090mm / 3.54"
182TD112112mm / 4.41"
213TD132132mm / 5.20"
254TD160160mm / 6.30"
284TD180180mm / 7.09"
324TD200200mm / 7.87"
364TD225225mm / 8.86"

โš ๏ธ NEMA and IEC are NOT directly interchangeable. Mounting patterns and shaft sizes differ.

๐Ÿ“‹ Quick Reference Card

Shaft Height Formula

D (inches) = First 2 digits รท 4

143T โ†’ 14 รท 4 = 3.50"
256T โ†’ 25 รท 4 = 6.25"
364T โ†’ 36 รท 4 = 9.00"

Must Match for Replacement

  • โœ“ Frame size (including suffix)
  • โœ“ Shaft diameter and length
  • โœ“ Mounting bolt pattern
  • โœ“ Rotation direction
  • โœ“ Voltage/phase/frequency
  • โ—‹ HP can be equal or greater
